Writing Methodology

Course Overview - Secondary

In this session, trainees will learn how to teach English composition classes using a variety of proven techniques. They will learn through studying, discussing, and using the techniques to produce their own writing. In addition, they will be expected to generate complete lesson/activity plans appropriate for use in their own classroom that employ the techniques they have studied. The lesson plans should harmonize with their normal English or other subject curriculum.

Textbook - Secondary

The primary textbook for this class is Techniques in Teaching Writing by Ann Raimes, published by the Oxford University Press (ISBN: 0-19-434131-3). Although it is not necessary for you to purchase this text, it is highly recommended that you do so if you are interested in learning more about teaching writing. It is available through most educational book retailers and the Internet (www.amazon.com).

Assignments

Writing Exercises:

A variety of brief writing exercises will be assigned throughout the session. These exercises will demonstrate how to use a given technique to teach writing. They should be completed and kept in a portfolio for later use or reference.

Possible Homework Assignment

Each trainee might be asked to complete some lesson/activity plans to teach writing to Korean students in middle or high school.

The lesson/activity plans should cover at least 45 minutes of class time. The plans should be based on

1)      Techniques in using Pictures to teach writing

2)      Techniques in using Readings to teach writing

3)      Techniques in Teaching Practical  writing

4)      Techniques in Teaching Controlled  writing

All plans will include worksheets and supplementary materials to reinforce the lesson objectives.
