·        To avoid common writing mistakes

·        To punctuate correctly

·        To revise and edit

·        To correctly format a printed page

·        To actively participate in a community of writers

·        To build up a portfolio of your writing, class notes, and research

·        To improve your general composition skills

Class Description

Class time will involve teacher direction, discussion, reading and writing. All activities [whether individual, pair, or group] will focus on developing your English proficiency.

Evaluations:

Ongoing tests and a final evaluation will assess how much trainees have improved as a result of applying themselves to their coursework.

Evaluations

  • Essays, homework  & Classwork 50%
  • Final Exam (essay) 40%

  • Participation         10%

Homework:

Trainees will be given regular homework. Some of this will be ‘completion’ homework i.e. completing work begun in class. There will also be longer, more formal, homework assignments concentrating on the five-paragraph essay. All major homework assignments will be corrected, and trainee performance will be recorded. Trainees are required to re-write their returned submissions and to keep their original and revised essays side-by-side in their writing portfolios.

Textbooks:

Great Writing 4 - Great Essays is the background textbook. Other handouts will be provided to highlight important aspects of the course.

Materials:

Please bring a clear file notebook to class for your handouts and homework assignments. In addition, please ensure that you have writing materials and a dictionary.

Note

Additional, more specific, information on writing assignments and projects will be provided as the session progresses.
